I love to read, so I'm especially excited about this one — Thirsty Caterpillar has just opened right here in Lake Oswego, and it's exactly the kind of "third place" our community has been missing. Part bookstore, part experiential kids' play space, and part cozy wine and coffee shop, it's a spot where parents can browse a thoughtfully curated book selection or unwind with a glass of wine while their kids get creative and messy in a dedicated play area.

Founded by Elizabeth Rogers, Thirsty Caterpillar is meant to be a portal into the world of literature for readers of all ages, with a monthly book club and author talks already in the works. If you have young kids (or just love a good bookstore), it's absolutely worth a visit.

📅 July Events That Have My Attention

🎶 Lake Oswego Concerts in the Park | Wednesdays, July 8–29 & select Sundays | Foothills Park & Millennium Plaza Park, Lake Oswego Summer nights in LO are made for these free outdoor concerts. The Wednesday series kicks off July 8 at Foothills Park (7–9 p.m.) with high-energy dance and tribute bands, running July 8, 15, 22, and 29. There's also a Sunday series at Millennium Plaza Park featuring local original music. Bring a blanket or low chair, pack a picnic (beer, wine, and cider are welcome), and settle in for one of the best midweek traditions in town. ci.oswego.or.us/concerts

🎭 Portland Original Practice Shakespeare Festival in Parks | July 10, 11 & 17 (and all summer) | Laurelhurst Park & Irving Park Now in its eighteenth season, OPS Fest brings free, delightfully unrehearsed Shakespeare to parks across the metro area — scrolls in hand, audience interaction, and an onstage prompter, just like Elizabethan England. In July, catch Henry IV Part 1 (July 10) and Comedie of Errors plus King Lear (July 11) at Laurelhurst Park, then Much Adoe About Nothing at Irving Park on July 17. No two performances are ever the same, and it's completely free. opsfest.org

🎷 Cathedral Park Jazz Festival | July 17–19 | Cathedral Park, North Portland The longest-running jazz and blues festival west of the Mississippi returns for its 46th year under the St. Johns Bridge. This free, all-ages weekend features the region's best jazz, blues, soul, and Latin artists, with food carts and a beer and wine garden on-site. Friday kicks off with the blues starting at 4:30 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday bring a full jazz, soul, and Latin lineup from 1 p.m. Bring a blanket and make a weekend of it. jazzoregon.org

🏳️‍🌈 Portland Pride Waterfront Festival and Parade | July 18–19 | Tom McCall Waterfront Park & Downtown Portland One of the largest donation-based Pride celebrations on the West Coast returns to the waterfront. The festival runs Saturday, July 18 (noon–8 p.m.) and Sunday, July 19 (11:30 a.m.–6 p.m.), with the parade stepping off Sunday at 11 a.m. from the North Park Blocks and winding through downtown to the festival grounds. Expect live performances, a maker's market, food and drink from local vendors, and a joyful, welcoming crowd. A $10 donation is suggested but no one is turned away. portlandpride.org
