The recent Spokane fires have been tragic, and my heart goes out to everyone who has lost a home or been impacted. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Windermere is the company’s commitment to supporting the communities where we live and work. I’m grateful that a fund has been established to help those affected. I’ve also been impressed, once again, by how people throughout Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho step up to support their neighbors when something like this happens. It also reminded me of a simple piece of advice a friend gave me years ago after losing his home in a fire. Once a year, walk through your house with your phone and record a video of every room. Open closets and cabinets and record your belongings. It doesn’t need to be a professional inventory, just create a visual record of what you own. After a fire, burglary or another devastating event, trying to remember and document everything that was in your home can be incredibly difficult. Having a video to reference can make that process much easier when working through an insurance claim. Hopefully, it’s a video you’ll record every year and never need. I hope everyone stays safe and gets to simply enjoy their homes and families. But this is one small step worth taking now that could be very helpful if the unexpected ever happens.
