Turns out August was National Make a Will Month, and I was reminded of a few things I thought were worth passing along. 1. If you don't have a will... This is your reminder to not procrastinate and make one.
2. If you have a will… review it. A periodic review is worthwhile, especially after any significant life changes, to make sure your will still reflects your current wishes. A few other documents are worth having in place:
- Healthcare directive
- Medical power of attorney
- HIPAA authorization
- Financial power of attorney
One thing that stood out to me: If you have children who are 18 or older, they should consider having a medical power of attorney and HIPAA authorization as well. Once they’re adults, parents don’t automatically have access to their medical information or the authority to make medical decisions on their behalf if they’re unable to do so themselves. If this has been sitting on your to-do list, consider this a good reminder to talk with an estate planning attorney and get it handled.
