We recently heard someone use the term “right-sizing” instead of “downsizing,” and it really stuck with us. For years, we’ve talked about downsizing as the natural next step when kids move out or homeowners reach a new stage of life. But downsizing implies that the goal is simply to have less, and we don’t think that’s always the case. More often, it’s about finding the right home for the way you live now. Maybe you love having 2,500 square feet, but you don’t need four bedrooms upstairs anymore. You might want roughly the same amount of space, just primarily on one level. Maybe you still want a big kitchen and living room because you’re the gathering place for holidays and family dinners, but you could do without the formal rooms you rarely use. Or maybe the biggest priority isn’t square footage at all. It’s getting rid of a large yard, stairs, ongoing maintenance, or other things that take up more of your time than you’d like. That’s what we like about the idea of right-sizing. It’s not necessarily about going smaller. It’s about being more intentional with the space you have and choosing a home that makes sense for the next chapter of your life. We work with a lot of homeowners who know their current home may not be their forever home, but they aren’t quite sure what comes next. You don’t have to have that answer before starting the conversation. If you’ve been thinking about making a change, we'd be happy to help you explore what right-sizing could look like for you. Sometimes seeing a few options and understanding what your current home could sell for is enough to start putting the pieces together.
